Innovation au RGLAB 2024

In continuation of its commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation in the media field, France Télévisions and its Innovation Department, in close collaboration with the French Tennis Federation, present the 2024 edition of RGLAB on the theme of tennis and spatial computing.

This year, RGLAB explores spatial computing with a theme that combines mixed reality, 3D, virtual production, and artificial intelligence.

France Télévisions explores spatial computing at Roland Garros

The Innovation Department of France Télévisions, together with the Sports Department, will present various prototypes on the theme "Tennis & Spatial Computing."

For this 2024 edition of RGLAB, in partnership with the French Tennis Federation, the Digital Department of France Télévisions and its technology partners will showcase several prototypes on the latest mixed reality headsets combining advances in Artificial Intelligence, spatial computing, and 3D video. These experiences will complement the work carried out in previous editions on immersive spaces and will allow for exploring new ways to utilize tournament content and interact with it.

The Roland-Garros tournament enables the innovation department and the editorial teams of the sports department to test the evolution of these new formats and assess their potential within the future offerings of France Télévisions.

Multi-courts

A dedicated mixed reality interface on Quest 3 and Vision Pro will allow interaction with the various live video streams from multiple courts of the tournament for a personalized experience that foreshadows future modes of sports content consumption.

Visualization of matches in mocap and animation:

Integration of 3D match restitution tests with a new mixed reality approach, on Quest 3 and Vision Pro adapted to the user's environment.

To go further, the innovation department has imagined a gamified experience around the tournament, allowing the transformation of one's personal environment (living room, apartment...) into the colors of Roland Garros with a set of playful interactions while enjoying a customized experience of watching the tournament.

2D to 3D video conversion:

France Télévisions explores, thanks to its technical partner Leia Inc. , the conversion of 2D video content to 3D by allowing, through their Immersity AI platform, the viewing of matches rendered in 3D with different formats (HD, 4k, 8k, or even the spatial video format...) on 3D screens incorporating their technology.

Virtual production and Gaussian splatting:

Tests of capturing and processing of data, thanks to the expertise of CEA-List, using the emerging 3D Gaussian splatting technology, integrated into a virtual production system, will allow the production of photo-realistic immersive video sequences within the Philippe Chatrier court, with the possibility of adding elements in augmented reality with the expertise of CEA.

Conversational AI Agent

In the continuation of research around artificial intelligence and avatars, the innovation department has developed a conversational agent in the form of a photorealistic avatar, capable of answering questions about tennis and the tournament's news. This conversational agent will be connected to various market LLMs and will utilize a set of data from reference sites (franceinfo, FFT, etc.).
