TOBA: THE VOLCANO THAT CHANGED THE WORLD

Toba

Synopsis

70,000 years ago, did several mega eruptions of the Toba volcano push humanity to the brink of extinction?

Obscuring the sun for several years, spreading toxic ashes over vast expanses, and triggering a devastating ice age, this repeated cataclysm killed many plants, animals and humans on Earth. However, at the same time, they may have pushed the survivors to develop new tools and a new social structure that proved essential for insuring their dominance over the planet. Could we all be the descendants of the few that survived the Toba?

Thanks to groundbreaking discoveries in volcanology, chemistry, genetics, archeology and neuroscience, a team of experts is rewriting the history of this super volcano. We follow their work from Indonesia to South Africa and India to France to understand the profound impact of Toba on our planet and the evolution of humanity.
